[lubuntu] A "Light Edubuntu" ?

Hello Ubuntu community!

I am new to this forum. Hope to be in the right place to comment my project. If not please tell me where should I go...

My son has an old Compaq desktop that he wants to dedicate as a PC for my four grandchildren. He have asked me to help him in this project. I am a retired System Engineer and have plenty of time; however my background does not include Linux.

I have read some reviews about Linux for Kids. Edubuntu fits most of the features we are seeking, however after installing Edubuntu 12.04, I found it is too heavy for my old PC: it took about one minute to launch a simple program and the disk is continuously working... it seems to me that the system is paging or swapping memory a lot.

I also tried some variants of "mini distros for kids". They installed and ran pretty well in my PC, but they offer a limited set of applications and have a rigid, not customizable environment.

So I am looking for a light but standard Linux distribution, satisfying most of our "wishes" via pre-packed software or compatible applications that I could acquire/download later.

I have read about Lubuntu. It sounds to be the right distro for my project, but I am afraid I will lose the rich set of applications bundled in Edubuntu. So what I seek is something like a "Light Edubuntu" :). Lubuntu includes a Lubuntu Software Center customized for Lubuntu, but I don't know if all applications bundled with Edubuntu are available there.

In summary my questions are:

  1. How well Lubuntu performs in a little PC like mine? (Pentium 4 2.4 GHz, RAM 487.7 MiB; HD 39.4 GiB)

  2. Which of the functions provided by applications bundled in Edubuntu are not supplied by apps. listed in the Lubuntu Software center?

    What I am trying to figure out is which functions (in particular functions that are interesting in a kids learning/playing/working environment) am I loosing while switching from Edubuntu to Lubuntu. Note that I said "functions", not "applications".By example, I don't care which browser comes whith it... but it should be compatible with some parental control tools.

  3. Which is the right forum or mailinng-list to request for help on specific doubts once I start using Lubuntu?

We welcome any comments from users who have experience setting up this type of environment for children in small PC's.

Thanks in advance for your attention.

[xubuntu] Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG not working.

I've got a Compaq tc4400 with an Intell 3954ABG wireless that does work. See the lspci -vv below.

The button on the side does not turn on the wiresless on light. So I don't know if that is bad or not.

Anyway I do have a few of these units working with XUbbunu but this one doesn't not sure if its:

Hardware, bios or drivers. Ethernet works.

[ubuntu] Capitel 3G CDMA EVDO Modem not working in 12.04

I use a Capitel 3G EVDO USB CDMA modem (device id - 1c9e:9e00)to connect to the internet. In previous versions of Ubuntu, 11.10, 11.04, 10.10, when I plugged the modem into the USB port, after brief time Network Manager would list it in the Network Manager list as Configure New CDMA modem and the I could configure the modem with its username and password and use it normally.

After I installed Ubuntu 12.04 Precise, the modem is probably detected because it does show up as Omega Technology, device id ic9e:9e00, when I type 'lsusb' in the terminal. But Network Manager does not display the modem in its list even after a long period of time. If I try to create a new Mobile Broadband connection, the new connection dialog box does not display any supported device.

This is a somewhat widespread problem of 3G modems not being detected with Ubuntu 12.04, whereas it worked perfectly well with the previous versions and apparently there is no clear solution to it yet. :(

[ubuntu] Mp3 Player mounts but is not detected by Banshee/Rhythmbox

My mp3 player mounts and I can play music from it via Banshee by manually opening the file. However, the mp3 player is not detected by Banshee, ie. it doesn't apper on the left hand panel and I can't sync it with my library. I have the same problem with Rythmbox. Does anybody have any ideas how to fix this?

I'm using an Archos 204 mp3 player with Banshee 2.4 on Ubuntu 12.04.

[ubuntu] Possible DNS issues?

I have a Ubuntu 12.04 server that I telnet into from a Windows machine. However, recently I've found that I can only ping by IP address. I already know that this screams DNS, but I am unsure what to do. I googled about flushing dns and got this:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/nscd restart

But when I run it, I receive "command not found." I statically assigned my IP address, mask, etc. I suppose that has something to do with it since I never specified any DNS information. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

Question about C++ Inheritance

PHP Code:

#include <iostream>
#include <map>

using namespace std;

class
base {
protected:

int number;

public:

base() { number 3; }

virtual void printNum() { cout << "Not the one class" << endl; }
};

class
one : public base
public:

one() { number 1; }

void printNum() { cout << number << endl; }
};

int main()
{

base bse;

one uno;

bse uno;

oneoneptr dynamic_cast<one*>(&uno);

onebaseptr dynamic_cast<one*>(&bse);

    if(
oneptr != NULLcout << "Test 1 worked" << endl;
    if(
baseptr != NULLcout << "Test 2 worked" << endl;

oneptr->printNum();

baseptr->printNum();
    return
1;

Output:

PHP Code:

Scratch.exe
Test 1 worked

Can someone explain why "Test 2 worked" was not printed in the output above? I know that if I had the instantiated the 'uno' object on the heap and was working with pointers instead of objects on the stack, the second dynamic cast would have worked. However, when I copy the uno object into bse, is the upcast necessitated by the need to make the superclass (one) fit in the space allocated for the base class (base)? If so, that would make sense (even though in this case, both objects should consume the same amount of space since the subclass does not introduce any new member variables). I still expected to see "Not the one class" print on the last line. Does anyone know why it did not print?

[all variants] 3TB drives partition not aligned according to Disk Utility

I bought a pair of 3TB SATA drives to replace a pair of 1.5TB drives in my music server. Whether I partition it (EXT4) with GParted or Disk Utility (Palimpsest) I am told (by Disk Utility) that my partition is not aligned:

Quote:

WARNING: The partition is misaligned by 3072 bytes. This may result in very poor performance. Repartitioning is suggested.

Currently I have only installed one of them and there is no data on it, so now is an excellent time to resolve this matter.

What am I supposed to do?

(FYI: I used GUID.)

[ubuntu] 12.04: after installing Gnome-shell, Unity 3D disapeared.

Let me expand:

I installed Gnome-shell to test it, and weirdly it was really really slow (like 3 minutes to open Nautilus slow) so I switched back to Unity 3D, but while the desktop boots, the dash and top bar are not showing at all. Unity 2D still functions fine. What can I do to get back Unity?

[ubuntu] is medibuntu-key required in 12.04

Hi all

I have installed ubuntu-restricted-extras

Do I require medibuntu-key for 12.04?

I ask this because I cannot get response from medibuntu server

Cheers:KS

Lernid the Ubuntu Classroom App

Ive got to say... I LOVE this app. Lernid is a tool that makes connecting to online learning events such as UbuntuOpenWeek and UbuntuDeveloperWeek simple, easy and fun. Lernid gets you immersed in the content quickly and hassle free. I had the pleasure of using it a couple of years ago when it first debuted and again today. It has come a long way and is very much refined now.

Above is an example of what the Lernid app can do. When you are in a class session and an instructor posts a website link, the top area of Lernid will update and show the weblink right in the program so you dont need to open a separate web browser. If the instructor of the class has a slideshow, his slides will appear in the top right of Lernid and as the session progresses new slides will appear at appropriate times making your learning experience more visual and enjoyable. The bottom half of Lernid shows the classroom where the instructor talks and adds commentary, while the right half shows the classroom chat going on.

If at any time you want to ask a question, you would tick or select the QUESTION box and type in your question. If the question is valid, it will be posted to the instructor to answer.

You can go into the Lernid app anytime, even if there is no class taking place. It will show you what events are coming up soon.

Using Lernid is very enjoyable compared to just the text of an IRC chatroom. Give it a try with tomorrows sessions Ubuntu Open Week sessions.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOpenWeek

You can find Lernid in the Ubuntu Software Center. Search for it by name and install.

Launcher and window menu bar missing after 12.04 upgrade

I upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 and now my launcher menu is missing. I opened terminal using CTRL+ALT+T and the menu shows but the GUI (bar) above that is missing.

Things like CTRL+TAB and image previewer don't work. I've tried whats mentioned here but no luck.

Another Screenshot of my GUI looks :

My home partition slowly fills up until the system is unable to complete even simple tasks

So I have an awesome configuration on my home pc. My /home directory has its own partition.

My home partition slowly fills up until the system is unable to complete even simple tasks. For example, when this issue has occured, I can load up firefox. It just pops up an error message saying that it cannot be done.

Rebooting solves the issue.

The strange thing is, I've run baobab and it doesn't notice a problem. There should be hundreds of gigabytes of data somewhere, but it doesn't see it.

Does anyone have any idea of how I might troubleshoot this issue? I'm thinking I could do lsof but I've always found the output of that to be too much information.

Maybe my drive is, like, dying.

Edit: is there a /home analog of /var that gets cleared out at boot time? Maybe I could check in there next time I notice this problem to see if I can divine what's up.

Update: I found the issue. my .xsession-errors file is filling up with

Authentication deferred - ignoring client message

Is there a way I can see what is causing this error and fix it?

Nvidia Beta Driver in Ubuntu 12.04

How do I install the new beta driver for Nvidia?

With Ubuntu before 12.04 I could do this:

1) Downloaded it from the site www.nvidia.com

2) Logout,

3) Move to tty1 (Ctrl + Alt + F1),

4) Stop lightdm or gdm (sudo service lightdm stop)

5) Remove any nvidia driver (sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-current nvidia-settings)

6) Cd into downloaded folder (cd ~/Downloads/)

7) Run the installer (sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-***.run)

But this doesn't work anymore, i.e., after reboot it doesn't start lightdm, I'm presented with tty1, and manually starting lightdm doesn't work either. Maybe the Noveau driver gets activated automatically and blacklisting it at /etc/modprobe.d/ doesn't inhibit it?

Installation has stalled

New installation on desktop has got to 'Downloading packages' but seems to have stalled; continues to show numbers - e.g. (216:58 remaining) - which constantly change, but progress bar has stopped; been running for at least 9 hours.

Network icon disappears from tray

I got 12.04 LTS but it happened in 11.10 too.
The thing is that the network icon disappears from tray without any warning. I've noticed it happens when the connection is weak and unstable, but I know it is just a graphical problem because it still works when it manages to reconnect automatically. When it doesn't, I can't find another way to put it back other than killing the X server or simply rebooting the OS.
But come on, this is Linux, obviously there is a way to solve this. So

  1. How I make it not to disappear ever again?

  2. At least, what can I do to make it reappear (I suppose with a command in terminal)?

How to load unity-launcher in standalone session?

I want to auto-start unity-launcher in a stand alone session without loading the top panel with it, like in this picture:

so how to do this ???

Not booting from USB Drive

I downloaded 12.04 of ubuntu, and y copied the 718 mb file to my usb Kingston Drive (which is 2gb total) and i tried booting it from setup and it can't! I click booting from USB kingston and it boots Windows normally...

How do I uninstall GRUB?

A secondary hard drive that I use only for data storage has GRUB still installed on it from past Ubuntu installations.

How can I remove GRUB from it without harming the rest of the drive's data?

Which desktop package am I actually using?

I'm a desktop user and boot straight into it. What's the best way to tell which desktop package I'm using (both kind and version), despite what would normally come with Ubuntu, and despite how it's configured or visually customized? I assume this info is stored in a configuration file somewhere for viewing, or queryable in some programmatic manner.

Ubuntu goes realy slow

I installed ubuntu trough out windows, know it should go a little slow, but it is quite a slow, and my chipset make noise as it where working really hard. W7 works fine.
My computer is an Acer 5742G, I3 , Nvida 540m, 4gb RAM.
I think there must be a missing driver, but I dont know how to install them as I am a new user, can some one give me a link to a good video tutorial?

Why does my system boot into a tty virtual terminal after installing 12.04?

First I tried to upgrade to 12.04 and then tried a complete install.

Each seemed to progress correctly, but the same thing happened afterwards in each case.

When the system is rebooted, I see the Ubuntu screen and then the command line for a virtual tty terminal.

What's better for Windows emulation - Wine or VM?

Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions about how these two compare?

What is "zenity" and did it crash?

I am on Ubuntu 12.04.

I was running the Ubuntu customization kit but it disappeared with the following message: "The application zenity closed unexpectedly". When I further ran it, it just closed after selecting the language option. It was running well on previous Ubuntu versions and I made many remix of Ubuntu with the application.

Thanks for your time.

Computer Freezes After GRUB

Ok so I've just built my first computer and have got it running, here are the specs:

Asus P8Z68-V PCI-E LX Motherboard, Intel Core i5-2500K, Patriot Memory 8GB (2 x 4GB), Viper Xtreme Series PC3-15000 1866MHz CL9 Division 2 Edition Memory (PXD38G1866ELK), Gigabyte ATI Radeon 6850 820MHz 1GB PCI-E HDMI OC Windforce 2x 500w Ezcool 24pin psu as standard.

The only thing I haven't bought new is the hard drive, it's a 250gb that I removed from an Acer Aspire M5100 that I was using till now with no OS Problems.

On start up it runs fine but is unresponsive after the GRUB menu disappears to load Ubuntu (Oneric Ocelot). The keyboard lights then turn off and the screen eventually returns that there is no signal.

Is there anything that I could be missing from building? (This is my first attempt at building my own PC)

Any input would be appreciated, thanks !
