Ubuntu Business Remix 12.04 LTS Available for Download

By now the reputation of Ubuntu is well known to all, not only users but also to companies and enthusiasts of all kinds azinde. With an announcement almost surprisingly, Mark Shuttleworth has announced that it is available the first version of Business Desktop Ubuntu Remix , a version of Ubuntu where you removed some features, such as music players or games, in favor of components that are a standard part the flow of corporate work. This remix brings the most common changes that Canonical has found through studies of feediback and institutional users, all available on one CD that can be downloaded and installed directly or used as a basis for further customization.

ubuntu business remix

The Ubuntu Business Desktop Remix contains all the software needed to integrate into your IT infrastructure while removing games, social networking and file sharing applications, development and sysadmin tools, and other software that organizations don't commonly support.

This first LTS-based release includes the Adobe Flash Plugin, VMware View, and the OpenJDK 6 Java run-time environment, while removing social networking software, file sharing apps, games and development/sysadmin tools. We now include full language support and both 32 and 64-bit builds, just the same as Ubuntu.

The result is a simple base image that can be deployed into your corporate environment or used as a starting point for further customisation. Users also benefit from great new features like built-in Microsoft Windows RDP 7.1 support and the Microsoft Visio diagram importer in LibreOffice Draw.

According to Mark Shuttleworth,

"This remix takes the most common changes we've observed among institutional users and bundles them into one CD which can be installed directly or used as a basis for further customization. Before anyone gets all worked up and conspiratorial: everything in the remix is available from the standard Software Centre. Packages out, packages in. No secret sauce for customers only; we're not creating a RHEL, we already have an enterprise-quality release cadence called LTS and we like it just the way it is. This is a convenience for anyone who wants it. Having a common starting point, or booting straight into a business-oriented image makes it easier for institutional users to evaluate Ubuntu Desktop for their specific needs."

[all variants] PulseAudio 2.0 call for testing

I found this in my inbox a little while ago:

Quote:

Hey folks,

PulseAudio 2.0 was recently released, and the audio team would like to get this into quantal at some point, but before we do, some testing is required to make sure things don't massively break. We don't believe they will, but its better to be sure.

PulseAudio 2.0 packages are available in the Ubuntu Audio dev PPA, https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive for quantal and precise. Precise packages are also available to help get increased testing coverage, as I am sure many of you are not yet running quantal.

If you find any regressions with PulseAudio 2.0, please file a bug against pulseaudio in launchpad, and clearly state in the bug subject that you are testing PulseAudio 2.0. Please also state whether you are running quantal or precise, just in case the bug is reproduceable on one, but not the other.

All being well, PulseAudio 2.0 will be uploaded to Quantal at the end of May, in time for alpha 1.

Thanks in advance.

[ubuntu] Brother 1440 printing PJL codes in 12.04

I recently upgraded from 10.04 to 12.04, and discovered a problem:

When I print things on my Brother HL-1440, it will generally print an extra page before the document I'm printing that appears to have PJL codes on it (@PJL SET SOURCETERAY=AUTO @PJL SET RESOLUTION=300). Tried rebooting the whole system, no luck; tried searching and found no matches.

This printer worked fine under 10.04 for years, so I assume it's something that got munged with the switch to 12.04. Any ideas?

[ubuntu] smb can not determine permissions

Hi, I have a desktop using Ubuntu 12.04 with a wired LAN connection to my Win 7 Laptop.

Samba is installed, and I can access desktop folders on both machines..all is good.

EXCEPT that I also need to access the C drive on the Windows laptop,I have been able to set up admin shares on it and C drive now says it is sharing.

The C drive appears on Ubuntu's network folder, but when I try and access it I get an unable to mount message.

Right clicking on the C drive tells me that "smb could not determine permissions"

How do I convince Samba that sharing is allowed?

I think if I can mount the drive all will drop into place..but selecting mount from the Ubuntu Network drop down menu.. brings me the same unable to mount message.

Windows is happy to share, Ubuntu cant mount to be able to allow the connection... where to next?

DavidB:confused:

How do I customize the NTP poll rate?

I'm setting up Ubuntu on an embedded machine that runs over a cellular connection, where we pay per byte. The machine also has no RTC battery, so it starts from a random time every boot.

I'd like to ensure that the time gets synced up when the cellular connection comes available so that log messages, etc have real times, but I also don't want to pay an arm and a leg for NTP traffic.

Can I customize the rate at which NTP updates the time? I'm using openntpd currently, but I'm not wedded to it.

The internet is not necessarily up at boot, so ntupdate and related at startup won't work. And scheduling via cron means waiting for the scheduled task to kick in, whereas I want a time daemon to get a time sync ASAP.

Ummmm yeah, monotone

yeah, how very orange....lol.

[ubuntu] Having trouble installing ubuntu

When booting from a live cd I get:

" ata_id[369]: hdio_get_identity failed for '/dev/sdc': invalid argument "

I tried 2 different burned live cd's and got the message and I even tried the method of installing via windows and got the same error. I'm having a hard time googling for answers, does anybody know how to solve this error? I'd like to mention that installing via Windows installed some of Ubuntu but it will not boot.

[all variants] Video plays in English and Itialian

;)I have Windows 7/ Vista and Ubuntu 10.04 Ultimate Ed 2.7 dual booted.

Anyway when I play this youtube video ( Italian Martial Artist giving instructions) he is speaking in Italian and another man in the background is speaking the English version as well. When I listen to the video the 2 languages are being spoken simultaneously-

It's an avi file-

I tried using different filters (media player classic - hs) and splitters (led) and all the standard stuff offered as suggestions online but that didn't work.

Can you help/advise me to get this video to play? please

[ubuntu] usermod password change - can't sudo

I just ran the following

#sudo usermod *username* -p *newpassword*

Now, I can't sudo. It wont accept either my new or old password.

I'm afraid to log off and I really don't want to rebuild. Can someone please help?

[all variants] help fixing auto mount for ntfs (fstab)

I have an ntfs partition that I want to be automatically mounted every time I login, at ~/share.

Here is the relevant line of my /etc/fstab:

UUID=12B01D06285506A5 /home/me/share ntfs defaults,uid=1000,noatime 0 0

This doesn't quite work. When I login, if I type `ls /home/me/share`, the directory appears completely empty.

I have to do:

`sudo umount /home/me/share`

which responds by saying "not mounted".

`sudo mount -a`

Which successfully mounts the partition. Now I can see the directory contents. Interestingly, if I skip the umount step, mounting like this has no effect-I still can't see the directory contents.

Thank you for any suggestions to fix this.

[ubuntu] Add folder under "COMPUTER"

Can anyone advise if it possible to add another item under the "COMPUTER" label in the left hand column which comes up when selecting the "Home" folder.

In the attached screenshot, I have added a folder called "My Photos" in the right hand pane, but I would like to have that included in the left hand pane.

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Sony Vaio laptop.

Thanks in advance

[ubuntu] Installing 12.04 on SSD to have dual boot : not seeing windows!

I have an SSD as the main HD. I already installed Windows 7 on it. I had already created the partitions where I reserved an unallocated 15Gb for Ubuntu. Windows works without problem. I took an ISO of the whold SSD as backup. It is brend new PC with new Windows 7 64 bit CD.

Now when I try to install Ubuntu 12.04, it does not see any partitions at all on my /dev/sda. It only sees an unallocated space. I did several internet search but I got fed up looking for an answer and I am tired.

I tried installing Ubuntu first but when I try to install windows 7 after, it says it sees the disk as being a GPT partition. So I went back to restore my /dev/sda with Windows on it and trying to install Ubuntu 12.04

[ubuntu] clamav will not install after previous install purged

I'm kind of stumped on a clamav reinstall. I have been running clamav on this mail server for a couple of years using clamav-daemon. I decided to upgrade it; I purged it using apt-get. After doing so, it would not install without dependency errors in freshclam. I am running Lynx server and the repository version is clamav 0.96.5+dfsg-1ubuntu1.10.04.3. The clamav site said something about making sure there are no old libclamav.so files that conflict and that the init.d files were manually removed... so.... I deleted those and did another purge and reinstall. Now, the new clamav install is looking for the old libclamav.so.6 and it is not there and it will not reinstall it.

There is this old problem with libclamav.so.6 not being found which is solved by ldconfig but this is not the issue as libclamav.so.6 does not exist on this server.

What I gather is that there are other leftover files or lib's that I don't know about or that do not un-install in the normal way and the new install expects them to already be there and doesn't reinstall libclamav.so.6 or it's new counter part.

The question... How can I get clamav to reinstall? How can I totally remove all remnants of it as if it was never installed? It's totally borked now and simply will not finish the install of freshclam. I am not new to Linux or Ubuntu and have a fair amount of experience but this is weird.

Thanks!

[ubuntu] Compiz issues

I quite liked the idea of customizing my desktop workspaces, different wallpaper for each, that cool cube switching effect, etc, and i saw this link posted in a Moderator or Admin's signature.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Co...0.10_and_11.04

I followed all the instructions, and got it working fine ..... or so i thought.

I disabled the "Have file manager handle the desktop" in Advanced Settings (or Gnome Tweak?), and now can't right-click on the desktop. Not too bothered about that, but when i try to alt-tab between open windows, the screen goes haywire, and then locks up.

I have to do a soft-reset to get out of it, and completely reload Ubuntu.

Any ideas on what the problem is, and/or how to fix it please?

Install Diablo 3 on Ubuntu

With the release of Diablo 3, many Ubuntu users want to know... will it even work on Ubuntu? The answer in short is - YES!

The easiest way to install Diablo III on Ubuntu is to use PlayOnLinux and use the download option from Blizzard. More info here:

http://www.playonlinux.com/en/commentaires-1043.html

If you dont yet have PlayOnLinux installed on your Ubuntu computer, install it via the instructions here for your version of Ubuntu: http://www.playonlinux.com/en/download.html

That is the easy way to install Diablo 3 on Ubuntu.

There is another way, and that is to directly use the disc and install via WINE. The Beta of Diablo 3 worked great on Ubuntu and so does the official release. More info here on tips to install Diablo 3 on Ubuntu with WINE...

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=13484

If you dont have WINE installed on Ubuntu you can install it via the terminal by inputing these commands...

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install wine1.3

We will be testing this out in the next day and will update the site with new info.

Addendum: Before spending the time installing Diablo III on Ubuntu, check out the System Requirements first:

Minimum:

Processor: Dual Core with 2.1 GHz
Memory: 2 GB System RAM
Hard Disk Space: 10 GB
Video Card: 512 MB Radeon 3870 / GeForce 8800 GTX
Additional: Keyboard/mouse or gamepad required Internet Connection required for online activation

Recommended:

Processor: Dual Core with 3 GHz
Memory: 4 GB System RAM
Hard Disk Space: 12 GB
Video Card: 1024 MB Radeon 4890 / GeForce GTX 260

What is the benefit of sudo over su

I have this (stupid) question.

What is the actual benefit that ubuntu (or debian derivatives) achieve by disabling root user.

Everywhere I read, its says to prevent unintentional damages for inexperienced users.
I want to know what exactly. Since sudo can execute all commands (that I know/ use). So in what case root can cause damage whereas sudo can't?

PS: I know how sudo works.

boot up fails. drops to initramfs prompt 12.04

I am running an HP pavilion dv6000 dual boot win7 and Ubuntu 12.04. (well, up until today). after a reboot, the boot process drops to the busy box shell and i end up at the prompt:

BusyBox v1.18.5 (Ubuntu 1:1.18.5-1ubuntu4) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
(initramfs)

Ive been researching others who have had this same problem, but haven't been able to find any of those solutions to work for me.

I tried the method described here:

http://www.proposedsolution.com/solutions/ubuntu-booting-to-initramfs-prompt/

and after the final command mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /root -o force it does nothing and gives me another (initramfs) prompt.

I can boot to a live CD (USB) and get to a terminal, but it doesn't seem to do much good, as I can see the /dev/sda1 in the ls command, but it doesn't recognize it when I try to cd to it.

My command line skills are very green, and am just starting to grasp them.

One more question: using the command fdisk -l how can I tell which mount point (sda1/sda2) is my windows partition and which one is Ubuntu?

Any help? I'm in a bit over my head right now...

Sound not working after 12.04 install

I have recently installed 12.04, but the sound is not working from both internal speakers, and from headphones when I connect them.

I have followed the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems to no avail and submitted a bug report. I've also tried running alsamixer and unmuting a few more things, but that didn't work.

I've tried to upgrade alsa sound drivers by running:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r)

however on the last command:

$ sudo apt-get install linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r)
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package linux-alsa-driver-modules-3.2.0-24-generic-pae
E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'linux-alsa-driver-modules-3.2.0-24-generic-pae'

What should I do to try get sound functioning?

It might be worth noting that 10.04 previously ran on this machine with no sound problems.

Black screen after installing Ubuntu 11.10

I downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 one week ago and burned it to a CD. I installed it on my system which has a 1.5 TB hard.

It installed successfully and I clicked on the restart button. The computer restarted and I chose the first option, which was to load Ubuntu. A black screen would appear with a cursor in top left hand side and I think the system was hung. I repeated this process by erasing the last Ubuntu install but I faced a similar problem.

Can anybody help me?
